Lithium or lead-acid? Mobility scooter batteries explained

Nearly every mobility scooter uses one of two kinds of battery, and the choice affects the weight, the price, the charging and whether you can take it on holiday. Here is the difference in plain terms.

Lead-acid: the traditional one

Sealed lead-acid batteries have powered mobility scooters for decades. They are heavy, entirely proven, and cheap to replace.

Good: much less expensive to buy and to replace; available everywhere; nothing exotic about them.

Less good: heavy β€” often the single heaviest part of a boot scooter; slow to charge, usually overnight; unhappy if left flat; and airlines will generally not carry them.

Lithium: the light one

Lithium batteries do the same job at a fraction of the weight.

Good: dramatically lighter, which is what makes 13 kg folding scooters possible at all; charge faster; cope better with being topped up little and often; usually last more charge cycles; many are sized to be airline friendly.

Less good: more expensive up front and more expensive to replace; and there are rules about flying with them.

How to choose β€” one question

Do you lift the scooter into a car?

If yes, lithium is usually worth the money. It is the difference between a lift you can manage alone and one you cannot, and a scooter you cannot lift is a scooter that stays in the hall.

If the scooter lives at home and goes out of the back gate under its own steam, lead-acid is perfectly good and you can spend the difference on a better scooter.

Flying with a lithium battery

"Airline friendly" means the battery is within the size limits airlines commonly allow, and that it can usually be removed and carried in the cabin. It does not mean every airline will automatically say yes.

Always ring your airline before you book, tell them the watt-hour rating (it is printed on the battery), and ask what they need from you. Rules differ between carriers and they change. Give yourself weeks, not days.

Charging habits differ

Lead-acid wants a long, full charge and hates being left flat. Charge after every use, overnight, and never store it empty.

Lithium is more relaxed about short top-ups and does not mind partial charges.

What is true of both: use the charger that came with it, charge somewhere dry at room temperature, and never store a battery flat for weeks. Our battery care guide covers the habits that matter.

Replacing them

Whichever you have, replace batteries in pairs where the scooter takes two. A new battery paired with a tired one is dragged down to match, and you have wasted half the money.

Do not mix types, and do not fit a lithium pack to a scooter designed for lead-acid unless the manufacturer offers it β€” the charger and the controller have to suit.
